Student leaders promise better placements in Chandigarh
CHANDIGARH: With a university being a hub of potential employees - graduates and post-graduates who will immediately look for jobs after the completion of their studies, the subject of good placements is an important one on the minds of student leaders. Last year's student council elections at PU saw promises of better placements, even though work on the ground level in the subsequent year was not as concrete.
The promise of improved placements featured in the agenda of all office-bearers of the 2014-15 council, with president Divyanshu Budhiraja having said that his prime focus will be the home turf of University Institute of Engineering and Technology. Budhiraja said more will be taken up and said some work had been done in the previous year as well.
"Students of BE-MBA from UIET, who were sitting for placements only after five years can now sit for the same after four years. We had taken this up with the authorities just ahead of the placements and special instructions were issued by the UIET director," he said.
Budhiraja, who is backed by National Students Union of India (NSUI), added that this year's focus will be on addition of more firms in the fest of the Central Placement Cell (CPC) and the introduction of a placement cell in the department of economics.
2014-15 vice-president Snigdha Bawa said in the past year, skill development sessions and orientation classes focusing on different departments were held for the first time before Avsar, the placement fest of CPC.
Vikramjit Singh Middukhera, Chandigarh president of Students Organization of India (SOI) which announced its panel on Monday, said the issue was pertinent. He added that awareness on part of the CPC about openings in state and central government roles was needed. "Our university is one of the finest in the country and the focus of professional courses, in particular was on job opportunities. Many a times, students don't get to know about government jobs. Our authorities should be aware of these and also keep informing students about the same. We will focus on this aspect this year," he said.
